San Clemente Facts, History, and Local Events

San Clemente, Orange County, California is a city, six miles south of San Juan Capistrano, with just over 70,000 people. It is located at the southern tip of Orange County, on the Pacific coast and lies fifty miles from San Diego and 60 miles from Los Angeles. Famous for its spectacular ocean views, year round clement climate and its Spanish Colonial architecture, San Clemente is also a haven for holiday makers and surfers alike and, the "Spanish Village by the Sea" is the most affordable beachfront community in Orange County.

The San Clemente area is the very epitome of the famous Orange County lifestyle. Miles and miles of beaches contain prime beachfront property, the surfing is of international standards year-round, and there is plenty for both residents and visitors to do. The city is planned and well maintained, with ample green spaces that help to curb undue over-development. The very nature of the city planning and the community assures that the great quality of life of the area will continue to be available to future generations.

The area was practically uninhabited before the 1770's, with only sporadic settlements of the Juaneno Indians. The Mission at San Juan Capistrano was by founded in 1776 by Father Junipero Serra. Indians as well as Spanish settlers soon began building on and inhabiting the area, although true development boom didn't begin until Ole Hanson, ex-mayor of Seattle, bought extensive property in the area in 1925. He christened the area San Clemente, designing a 2,000-acre community with classic Spanish colonial style red tile roof buildings. Hanson, a visionary, realized that the pleasant climate, pristine beaches and incredibly fertile soil of the area be a haven to future generations who wished to escape the big city life for something simpler and more tranquil.

While the Mediterranean climate and clean, green surroundings make the area attractive as a real estate destinations for would be residents, visitors too have a plethora of riches when it comes to things to do and see are concerned. Not only is the city an easy drive away from most of the Orange County cultural and tourist destinations, it has a number of local attractions to offer as well! With its year round swells, San Clemente is one of the premier surfing destinations in the area, attracting surfers from around the globe. It is also the surfing media capital of the world, and home to innumerable surfing magazines and journals.

The annual mid-summer Ocean Festival, attracts thousands of visitors in late July, while the San Clemente Village Farmers Market, held every Sunday, provides cost saving purchases of fresh picked, and tree ripened produce for both locals and visitors. Other events and attractions include the Village Art Fair, a vintage car show, the annual Sea Fest and chowder cook off in October, the Taste of San Clemente in November and an art walk. Don't forget to visit the Casa Romantica, and the Historic San Clemente Pier, and make sure you see the local Open Skateboard Tournament in September. Another amazing event, especially for the art lover, is the Paint San Clemente week in mid June, when the best artists in Southern California come to participate in open air painting competitions, Quick Draw, and gallery exhibits.
