A small town named for the livestock herding that used to take place here frequently in the late 19th century, Rodeo, California, is located east of the strait of Carquinez within the borders of Contra Costa County and is home to almost 10,000 residents. The town is a bedroom community for the San Francisco metropolitan area, and is only about 25 miles from the city. Connections into that city can be made via the Bay Area Rapid Transit train system, whose nearest station is in Richmond, nine miles from here.
Seven four-year colleges and half a dozen community colleges are located around here. A single elementary operates in the city, and students attend a nearby middle and high school in Crocket. The town operates Foxboro Park, and the county library system runs a branch here. Vallejo, just a five-mile trek away, is the site of the nearest hospital. Rodeo is acclaimed as the hometown of a famous New York Yankees baseball pitcher who was a Hall of Fame inductee, Lefty Gomez, and the ball fields in the town bear his name.
