Home to over 100,000 people on the bay of San Rafael, the city of Richmond, California, lies within the western confines of Contra Costa County. The city's location on the bay has helped build it into a major industrial port. It is home to a more than five-mile bridge that connects the county with Marin County over the San Pablo Bay. A restored ship from World War II that was assembled in town now sits in the city and acts as historical relic, where residents can learn more about the area's past. The national Amtrak rail service has two lines that run through here, and the station at which they stop also houses stops for the Bay Area Rapid Transit regional rail system and local buses.

A community college is found nearby in the next town over, San Pablo. Public schools here include 16 primary schools, seven K-8 schools, three junior highs, five senior highs and a single charter school. Chevron operates an oil refinery in this city, and other major employers include Kaiser Permanente hospital, Berlex, Macy's, Costco and the California Autism Foundation. A regional Social Security office operates out of here as well, employing over 1,000. Attractions in the city include several shopping centers, several performing arts centers, a playhouse, a railroad museum and a historical park.
