The city is Alameda County’s county seat, and is home to a widely diverse population—a place where over 150 different languages are spoken. Oakland is home to one of the area’s major commercial passenger airports, has eight Bay Area Rapid Transit regional railway stations, and is served by a number of public bus routes.

Public schools here are administered by the Oakland Unified School District and include nearly 60 primary schools, more than 20 junior highs and almost 20 high schools. Outside of the district’s control are an additional 25 charter schools and about a dozen private schools. Sports are an institution in Oakland, as the home of famed franchises like the Oakland Raiders of NFL, baseball’s A’s and the Golden State Warriors of the NBA. A pair of community colleges and at least a half-dozen universities provide degree courses and education opportunities. Attractions include a zoo, a science center, and a gaggle of events and festivals hosted throughout the year.
