The region of northern California renowned throughout the world for its wine production, Napa County, lies just north of the San Francisco Bay Area and is home to around 125,000 residents. The county is one of the original counties of the state and was established in 1850 when California founded its statehood. The county is flanked at the north end by the Mayacamas Mountains, in which lies Mount Saint Helena, the area's second tallest peak and the home of Robert Louis Stevenson State Park. The county’s west side, too, holds Hood Mountain, providing endless rolling hills and valleys to traverse. At the end of the 19th century, over 140 wineries were operating in the county; today, Napa Valley is home to more than 300 wineries, an attraction that helps it to draw as many as five million visitors annually.
The county is the site of more than 30,000 acres preserve farmland, and cities within Napa County include American Canyon, Calistoga, Napa, St. Helena and Yountville. Annual events celebrated here include a mustard festival, the Napa Town and Country Fair in August and a Wine Country Film Festival. A farmers market operates on Tuesdays during May through October. In addition to the wineries, visitors to the area can enjoy a number of spas, three golf courses, an opera house, symphony and theater, hot-air balloon rides, the Napa Valley Museum and the Napa Valley Wine Train.
