Moraga, California, is a city with a population of about 16,000 located inland in the San Francisco Bay region within the borders of Contra Costa County. Oakland is just 20 miles west, meaning all the amenities of a large metropolitan city are within attainable reach. The public school district includes three elementary schools, one junior high and one senior high. The city also is home to a private high school, Orion Academy, which serves teenagers with neurocognitive disorders. The city is also the home of a private, Catholic university, Saint Mary's College of California, which has an enrollment of around 4,000.

Technical and science services employ almost a quarter of this city’s residents and Oakland’s outer ring contains the closest hospital. A local branch of the county library operates here and Moraga Shopping Center offers residents a place to find many of their needs. The college operates a gallery showcasing the work of its students and also offers a gallery that hosts rotating exhibits. There are a handful of parks and one country club in operation, and the northern edge of the town reaches into the Upper San Leandro Reservoir. Many of the state’s redwood forests also lie north of Moraga.
