Monarch Beach Facts, History, and Local Events
Monarch Beach is a seaside community between Dana Point and Laguna Beach, in southern Orange County, California. It is a quiet, charming, resort style, wealthy, gated community officially within Dana Point. Close to the boundary between the cities of Dana Point and Laguna Niguel, Monarch Beach is a tourist attraction for some A-listers, and the rich and famous. The community is named after Monarch Bay, its most prominent feature. The bay in turn is named after the Monarch Butterfly, which once bred here in the Sagebrush and Manzanita. However, recent development has wiped out the breeding grounds, replacing them with large homes. Monarch Beach residents are close to the beach, live in an area with a low-crime rate, have some of the top-rated public schools in the state, and can lead a relaxed, and comfortable life.
Also close to the community are amenities like the Dana Point Library, the shopping center, the gas station, and The Links one of the best golf courses in South California, and the St. Regis Resort & Golf Course. For the golf enthusiast, few courses can match the natural beauty and variety of challenges of The Links. It is a par-70 championship course with stunning ocean views, laid out in the classic Scottish links style. Other attractions include the Crystal Cove State Park, just north of Laguna Beach. A beautiful stretch of land, the park has campsites, coastal cliffs and beach front cove. It is a favorite haunt of both mountain bikers and scuba and skin divers. Dana Point Harbor is a short distance away and houses over 2,000 yachts and provides complete harbor facilities. It's a great place to go fishing, windsurf, jetski, or take a kayak out. There are shops, restaurants, and picnicking areas and even a baby beach for the kids.
The Ocean Institute at Dana Point Harbor is a good place to study dolphins, whales, and sea lions with state-of-the-art scientific equipment. Dana Point is also the ideal location for Sports fishing and whale watching excursions, especially during the gray whale migration season, December through April. In spring, the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce celebrates its Whale festival with a Street Fair, food, entertainment and arts & crafts. April sees the Sunset Jazz at The St. Regis Concert, held at St. Regis resort Monarch Beach and summer brings the Pageant of the Masters in July and August. It is and exhibition of original works by gifted artists, along with a spectacular stage production. The San Clemente Ocean Festival in July is a weekend of family events, fishing derby, sand sculpture contest, car show, and concert.
Fall brings the California Coastal Cleanup Day in September, a volunteer event that throws focus on marine environment and conservation. More that 40,000 people volunteer every year to remove debris from over 400 sites statewide. In September comes the Tall Ships Festival at the Marine Institute with Sea Chantey Concert, numerous maritime exhibits, model boat building, crafts and food. There is also live entertainment, and living-history demonstrations.
