Mission Viejo Facts, History, and Local Events

Mission Viejo is located above the scenic Saddleback Valley, in southern Orange County. Peaceful, and beautiful, it is also a great place for business and leisure activities and pursuits. Business visitors find the community to be a convenient distance from the Irvine Spectrum and Technology Park, the John Wayne Airport, and the Anaheim Convention Center. And leisure pleasure seekers have a host of options for things to do and see. The Mission Viejo Lake numerous golf course, live performances and the world famous Disneyland theme park, all of these amazing attractions are within easy driving distance.

The name derives from "Rancho Mission Viejo" the original Spanish land grant in the area from which the community grew. It is a great place to live as well, and the 2007 Morgan Quitno survey on crime statistics based on FBI data places Mission Viejo at the top of the list of the safest cities in the United States, and in 2009, the CQ press designated it the safest city in California. Home to over a hundred thousand people, Mission Viejo is one of the largest of the master-planned communities in the US. It is a primarily -residential suburban community in both nature and culture. There are a number of offices and businesses too, and a community college, and regional mall as well.

Mission Viejo California Area Map Originally, the area was used mostly as grazing land for cattle and sheep. The Mission Viejo land was originally purchased by English John Forster, married to the Mexican governor's sister, who supplied horses to the US military during the Mexican-American War. For a long time the area was undeveloped due to its peculiar geographical characteristics. Most early developers considered the land undevelopable, until Donald Bren drafted the master plan placing placed the roads in the valleys, and houses to be built contour-wise, on the hills. As a result of this planning, houses and shopping centers are uniformly designed, usually in the adobe, stucco and barrel tile roofed Spanish mission style. Soon land and homes in the area were much in demand, and residents began to move into the new neighborhoods. The master plan for the community was strictly adhered to, keeping the number of homes, parks, recreational areas and retail and business areas limited and balanced. Very few changes have ever been made to the original plan, other than the addition of Saddleback College and Lake Mission Viejo.

Today, more than a hundred thousand people live in Mission Viejo and are served by the Capistrano Unified School District and the Saddleback Valley Unified School District. Capistrano Unified runs eight schools including the Capistrano Valley High School. Other schools in the area include Silverado High School, Mira Monte High School, etc. The Saddleback Community College and the University of California, Irvine, along with Chapman University, and California State University, are close by.

Things to see and do abound, from parks to golf courses, a man-made lake, the Saddleback Civic Light Opera, the Kaleidoscope Courtyards entertainment & shopping complex. Live music on weekend nights along with a movie theater, numerous restaurants the showcase mall, The Shops at Mission Viejo, and so on. The Mission Viejo Nadadores offers round the year programs in swimming. The Annual Street Painting Festival in May showcases performance art from all over. The KSBR Birthday Bash, also in the same month, has over twenty headliners playing in a unique jazz jam.
