Long Beach Facts, History, and Local Events

Long Beach is a California city that borders Orange County. These are areas that will share a number of products and services from local merchants. You will find that Long Beach will give you that summer feeling thanks to the open water and warm climate. It is also a city that can boast to surrounding an entire town known as Signal Hill.

The history of this Orange County neighbor dates back past the 16th Century. The King of Span gave a chunk of land known as Los Nietos Ranch to a soldier known as Manuel Nietos. Los Cerritos and Los Alamitos were split from this area with a man known as Jonathan Temple purchasing the former. By 1916, under new ownership of Jotham Bixby, Los Cerritos was split up into neighborhoods like North Long Beach, Bixby Knolls and California Heights. Long Beach was occupied by a number of Japanese people before the World War II. 1921 saw the discovery of oil and this was also one of the largest international ports, something that it is still proud of to this day. There was a large earthquake in 1933 that shook Long Beach and destroyed infrastructure as well as taking the lives of about 120 people.

The people of Long Beach as of 2009 were standing at about 492,682 in population. It comprises of about 52 neighborhoods like East Village, Downtown Long Beach, Alamitos Heights and many others. This is a community that will accommodate any demographic and the school districts, employment opportunities and community services that City Hall caters for are enough proof. This city ensures that its people are safe through the restriction of registered sex offenders residing in the area. This means that a sex offender cannot be about 2,000 feet from a civic center, school or children’s playground. This applies to those on parole as well.

There are a number of locations in Long Beach, California that are worth visiting. The top attraction aside from the port is the Aquarium of the Pacific. This is a non-governmental initiative that lets families and visitors see the design that is inspired by the ocean waves. This winner of Climate Action is a museum and aquarium that lets the public enjoy the benefits of conserving the climate and especially the water. This is also the home of a Boeing production facility that is located at the large Long Beach airport which also serves South Bay and areas of Orange County. The 1936 ship RMS Queen Mary is a fully docked vessel that tourists can enjoy hotels, malls and restaurants.

Long Beach, California is also home to one of the largest unified school districts which means that children are well catered for. Some of the high schools in the area are the setting for some of television and cinema favorites. For example, Fox’s hit television show, Glee, has a home in one of them. When it comes to other locations, you will find that films like Gone in 60 Seconds and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen were filmed here. Shows like CSI: Miami and Dexter are usually filmed in this area. This means that the community enjoys revenue from the entertainment industry as well as tourism and crude oil trade.
