A city of mid-size located at the eastern corner of the Bay region, Livermore, California, is about 30 miles east of San Francisco. The city is home to about 75,000 residents and lies within the boundaries of Alameda County. There are two hospitals operating in this city to provide medical care to residents, and a new branch of the county library was opened in the city in 2004. The public education system includes 11 primary schools, four junior high and three senior highs, all operated under the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District. For post-secondary education, a pair of two-year colleges, Las Positas Community College and Chabot Community College, offer a multitude of courses and opportunities.
The city is near the heart of wine country and is the home to 26 wineries, many of which are popular for visitors looking for tastings off the beaten path. Other attractions include four golf courses, a number of community parks, a symphony, ballet company, dance theater and opera. Annually, the city hosts a rodeo, along with a parade to kick it off. One of the larger and more high-profile employers in the city is the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a federal research center that houses the laser that is the most powerful in the world. Other smaller laboratories operate as well. Two stations provide access to the ACE -- Altamont Commuter Express - train, a rail system that operates between Stockton and San Jose.
