One of the oldest cities in Orange County, Laguna history goes back to the Ute Azteca Indians who were its original inhabitants. The first settlers began to arrive here after the American Civil War. Although the 1870s saw the building of a small community, Arch Beach, at Bluebird Canyon, by 1880 or so, most of the surrounding land was subdivided, and the community ran into economic problems by the end of the decade. Eventually it was moved to the Laguna Canyon, and by 1900, five families were living here attempting to farm the land. As more and more farmers from further inland began to travel to the area for picnics and weekends, the local farming families made some extra money by letting them rent land, short term, essentially beginning the tourist industry in the area. By the 1920’s, friends and followers of the artist Norman St Clair had begun arriving in droves, with the effect that soon about half of the community comprised of artists.

The next wave of arrivals consisted of film makers and actors from Hollywood including some of the most famous stars. Since its incorporation in 1927, the community has grown steadily, keeping pace with the development of the Orange County well into the 1980s and even beyond. Today’s Laguna Beach is a resort town drawing stars, locals and the average Joe alike with its many attractions.
