La Cresenta Facts, History, and Local Events

La Crescenta, also known as La Crescenta- Montrose, is an unincorporated census-designated area in California, within the Los Angeles County. It comprises the portions of the Crescenta Valley that do not fall within the cities of Glendale and La Cañada Flintridge. There is scope for some confusion here, however, because the parts of the city of Glendale which fall to the north of Montrose are also sometimes called La Crescenta. The community of La Crescenta-Montrose borders Glendale, the Angeles National Forest, Tujunga, and La Cañada Flintridge. La Crescenta is basically a smallish foothill community, and it is often said to consist of part of northern Glendale, and partly the unincorporated area of Los Angeles County. About five square miles in area, this hilly community is home to some 45,000 people and more are moving in everyday.

La Crescenta, California Area MapThe schools in La Crescenta-Montrose are some of the best in the county, and are part of the Glendale Unified School District. There is one highly reputed high school, an award winning middle school, and six elementary schools in the community, providing the children of the residents with the education they need. The elementary schools in the La Crescenta area include the La Crescenta Elementary School, which was named a California Distinguished School in 2008; the Dunsmore Elementary School which was named a California Distinguished School the same year; the John C. Fremont Elementary School in Glendale which was named a California Distinguished School two year previously in 2006; the Abraham Lincoln Elementary School; the Monte Vista Elementary School, awarded the Blue Ribbon School award in 2005; the Mountain Avenue Elementary School, also awarded the Blue Ribbon School award the same year; and the Valley View Elementary School, yet another recipient of the honor that year.

The middle School is the award winning Rosemont Middle School and High Schools include the Crescenta Valley High School, twice awarded, the Clark Magnet High School, also twice honored. There are independent study institutes like the Verdugo Academy and the Village Christian School both of which cater to the K-12 level student population. A number of Private schools also exist in and around the community, including the Armenian Sisters Academy, the Chamlian Armenian School, the Holy Redeemer Catholic School, St. James the Less Catholic School, and the Crescenta Valley Adventist School.

La Crescenta is well connected. The Foothill highway, 210 provides access to the Los Angeles Freeway system, as do the two Glendale freeways. These connectors allow residents and visitors to get in and out of town quickly and smoothly, and to get to just about anywhere within the county, the state, and by extension, the country. The Southern California Rapid Transit Bus System offers efficient and well run public transit services in the community, and has connections to all major points of interest. If you need to get to a place further than your car or a bus can take you, all you have to do is get to the Burbank Airport, just 12 miles away, or better still, just go all the way to LAX, the busiest airport in the world, a mere 24 miles from La Crescenta.

The culture vulture will not starve in La Crescenta either, and can visit some fine establishments, including art galleries and studios such as the Elite Art Studio, and the Grolet Gallery. Recreation options include retail therapy at Montrose Shopping park, an outdoor shopping area, as well as numerous charming specialty shops and quaint boutiques. There are Regional shopping malls, minutes away in the nearby urban centers of Glendale, Pasadena, Eagle Rock, and Arcadia. Other opportunities for relaxation include fun at La Crescenta's park system, including the Crescenta Valley Park, the Dunsmore Park, the New York Park, and the Two Strike Park.
