La Canada Facts, History, and Local Events

La Canada Flintridge is a community that nestles in the San Gabriel Mountain foothills, just a little over twenty minutes to the northeast of the city of Los Angeles. It is located in unincorporated Los Angeles County, and close to Pasadena, Glendale, and La Crescenta, while the Angeles National Forest is to the north of the city. The community of La Canada combines the best of the California life with the perfect small-town atmosphere. There is a sense of shared living, an emphasis on family values, and a low-key lifestyle that is perfect for bringing up a family. This Glen between the Hills centers its life on its community, and its children, and the public school system upholds this focus through consistently top rank achievements. Residents and visitors also have the advantage of the Foothill Boulevard business district which has a range of shops, dining options, and services. The city has many parks, a community center, and golf and tennis clubs. There are riding clubs, and numerous hiking and horse riding trails in beautiful surroundings. NASA has the headquarters of its Jet Propulsion Laboratory at La Canada.

La Canada, California Area MapThe La Canada region was originally inhabited by Native Americans. Much later, in the late 18th and early 19th century that European settlement began and the area became a part of the Mexican land grant of Rancho San Pascual, in 1826. Two neighboring communities, La Canada and Flintridge, joined officially in 1976, and incorporated as La Canada Flintridge. Today, the erstwhile Flintridge forms the southern end of the city, but the community is often called just La Canada for convenience. A point to note is that the city name, whenever used in full, does not take the hyphen, as an allusion to the essential unity of the two communities.

The schools of the city are largely under the La Canada Unified School District, ranked second in California. There are three public schools, with grades K-6, and the La Canada High School also has grades 7-8. This is among the top 100 high schools throughout the US. A small part of the city is also served by schools under the Glendale Unified School District. There are many well regarded and highly ranked private schools like St. Francis High School. Started in 1963, the La Canada Unified School District is a high achieving district characterized with forward-looking methods, involved teachers and a supportive community. The students of the various schools, at various levels, have established achievements of scoring among the top 10% of all the students in California.

La Canada is the headquarters of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the primary research and development center, in the US, for robotic solar system exploration. Other unique attractions include the largest collection of species of camellia in all of North America, housed at the Descanso Gardens. The La Canada Congregational Church, once known as the Church of the Lighted Window, is the oldest church in the city, and the Lanterman House is the local museum housing local historical archives in a heritage building. The city is home to some 22,000 people, and the community is fairly affluent, with a higher than national median for cost of living and per capita income. Although recent economic growth has been slow, due to various international and national crises, the city and the community of LA Canada Flintridge are now placing greater priority on rebuilding existing businesses and attracting new economic growth in a balanced manner, without sacrificing its small town charm and family values oriented lifestyle and community.
