La Canada Flintridge is a community that nestles in the San Gabriel Mountain foothills, just a little over twenty minutes to the northeast of the city of Los Angeles. It is located in unincorporated Los Angeles County, and close to Pasadena, Glendale, and La Crescenta, while the Angeles National Forest is to the north of the city. The La Canada region was originally inhabited by Native Americans. Much later, in the late 18th and early 19th century that European settlement began and the area became a part of the Mexican land grant of Rancho San Pascual, in 1826. Two neighboring communities, La Canada and Flintridge, joined officially in 1976, and incorporated as La Canada Flintridge. Today, the erstwhile Flintridge forms the southern end of the city, but the community is often called just La Canada for convenience. A point to note is that the city name, whenever used in full, does not take the hyphen, as an allusion to the essential unity of the two communities.
The schools of the city are largely under the La Canada Unified School District, ranked second in California. There are three public schools, with grades K-6, and the La Canada High School also has grades 7-8. This is among the top 100 high schools throughout the US.
