There were prehistoric humans in the area something like twelve to eighteen thousand years ago. In more recent history, the area was occupied by the Gabrielino Indians from around the year 10 BC. In the mid 18th century, the Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola arrived in the San Joaquin Valley and began the Spanish period of the history of this area. The Spanish land grants divided up the land in the county. The newly independent Mexican government, in 1831, seized control of the land holdings, redistributing the ranches to Mexicans. Population remained low in the area, and animal grazing and ranching were the primary forms of land use. Agriculture intensified during the First World War and World War II saw the building of two Marine Corps facilities in the area. The land in the area was primarily owned by the Irvine Company, and a 1,000 acre parcel was given to the University of California for a new campus. The University's architect consultant drew up a master plan for a city of at least 50,000 inhabitants, in conjunction with the Irvine Company planners. Their plan was a balance of residential and industrial zones, recreational areas, and commercial centers with adequate greenbelts and open spaces. The city was incorporated in 1971, and the population grew rapidly until the current community which has new age transportation programs, futuristic transit systems, thriving and encouraging business environment, award winning educational institutions, and a great well round lifestyle.

The city government, and the community, is committed to maintaining the charm and cultural environment, countering and eliminating community deterioration, creating a safe community, encouraging economic prosperity, and maintaining a business-friendly ethos. The city is served by the Irvine Unified School District with four high schools, while the Arnold O. Beckman High School is operated by the Tustin Unified School District. There are many elementary and middle schools, and two alternative schools. Many colleges and universities serve the educational needs of Irvine, including the University of California, Irvine, Irvine Valley College, and Concordia University.
