Hercules Quick Facts

A small city east of the bay of San Francisco, Hercules, California, is home to about 20,000 residents and lies on San Pablo Bay. The town is about a half-hour’s drive from both San Francisco and Oakland, and lies within the confines of Contra Costa County. The city maintains five parks for its residents to enjoy, including one that encompasses more than 65 acres. Residents can enjoy the town’s golf course, Franklin Canyon, and its swimming center in their spare time as well as a yearly cultural festival. Trails and other open space take up nearly 1,000 acres here, ensuring it won’t be a problem to find some open space.

Public schools in the city include three elementaries, a junior high and a senior high. To maneuver about town, citizens can take one of the bus lines that operate here, run by the Western Contra Costa Transit Authority and offering connections into larger public transportation systems of the Bay area, including the BART. In the late 19th century, a company that manufactured explosions operated here. The company’s most popular brand was called Hercules, and this is where the town’s name comes from. Scientists and others can find employment opportunities at the Bio-Rad Laboratories in town. The closest medical facilities are at San Pablo, a seven-mile drive.
