One of Oakland’s largest suburbs, Hayward, California, is a city with over 155,000 residents, enough to make it the sixth-most-populous city in the Bay region. The city lies east of the bay of San Francisco and is within the borders of Alameda County. The city is home to two hospitals to provide medical care to residents in and around Hayward. The city houses a small executive airport with limited traffic among commercial passengers, but larger, commercial airports in San Francisco and Oakland offer a number of flights in and out daily.
There are two stations with stops for the region’s Bay Area Rapid Transit regional railway system that connects area cities, and county buses provide a number of routes as well. An Amtrak station in town offers daily service connecting to Auburn and San Jose. The public education system is run by the Hayward Unified School District, which administers half-a-dozen primary schools, five junior high schools and four senior highs. A private Catholic senior high also operates. California State University’s East Bay campus is located here, as is the smaller, private Chabot College. Attractions in the city include two golf courses and a shopping mall, with events like a blues music festival, a rodeo, a parade and a zucchini festival held throughout the year.
