Garden Grove Facts, History, and Local Events

Garden Grove, California is in North Orange County, a mere six miles from the beach. This city of roughly 175,000 residents is one of the easiest to access, and the most popular, communities in the county. The Garden Grove Freeway, which is the state highway 22, runs through the city, and connects Garden Grove to a system of four important freeways. Close to Disneyland, the Disney California Adventure, Little Saigon, Knott’s Soak City, Knott’s Berry Farm, and The Block in Orange, the city is the most sought after tourist location in the area. Also called the City of Youth and Ambition, Garden Grove is a culturally diverse, economically strong community with a sizeable Vietnamese-American, and Korean-American population. It is also known – word wide – for its famous landmark, the Crystal Cathedral, with its distinctive architecture and weekly inspirational broadcasts of the 'Hour of Power'. The city is also a popular destination for theater enthusiasts, due to the presence of three stage theaters. A vibrant and progressive city, Garden Grove holds four cultural festivals a year, celebrating the Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic, and American cultural heritage of its citizens. The Strawberry Festival held by the city each year is the largest Memorial Day event celebrated by any community in western United States.

Conveniently located, less than ten miles from John Wayne Airport, and within minutes of some of the largest attractions in the area, The City of Garden Grove offers great community services, quality educational and recreational programs, and wholesome family entertainment to residents. Schools in the city are operated under the Garden Grove Unified School District, and are rated among the best and safest schools in Orange County. There are 45 elementary schools, alongside nine junior high, and eight high schools. Additionally, five community colleges help provide for all the educational needs of the community of Garden Grove. It is arguably one of the safest places in California to live in and has tolerant and diverse community. The community’s outstanding commitment to volunteering makes it an even better place to call home. Garden Grove, California has the highest number of per capita places of worship in the state, and boasts safe streets, to go with its cultural and religious diversity.

The foundations for the community were laid in 1874, when Alonzo Cook purchased around 160 acres of land and donated part of it to be the site for a schoolhouse and a post office. By 1889, when Orange County incorporated, Garden Grove only had a population of 200. Although it was founded in 1874, with a school and a Methodist church, it continued to be a very small rural settlement until the railroad arrived in this area. This quiet farming community awoke in 1905, when the Pacific Electric Railroad arrived in Garden Grove. As always happens, the railroad opened up new connectivity, and helped the town prosper bringing not just tourists and visitors, but also new settlers. In the four decades that followed, agriculture remained the most important mainstay of the economy, and exponential growth was hampered by two major disasters a flood in 1916, and an earthquake, in 1933.

The Second World War had a deep effect on the development of Garden Grove, like many other cities in the area. At the end of the war, returning servicemen, who had trained in California and fallen in love with the weather and beauty of the area, chose to settle here to work and raise families. Availability of low priced land caused a building boom, and Garden Grove grew extremely fast through the 1950s. The rural nature of the area soon changed into a more urban community. The town was incorporated in 1956, and today, Garden Grove is the fifth largest city of the county. A dynamic city with a strong sense history, the town is also culturally diverse, and has a sizeable Asian population – mainly Vietnamese and Korean. School level education in the city is under the Garden Grove Unified School District, which is the third largest school district within the county. Fifteen of the schools in the district have been designated Title I Achieving Schools in the recent past. There are also a number of higher education opportunities within easily accessible distances. From the California State University Fullerton campus, to the Coastline Community College; from the Coast Community College, Costa Mesa, to Irvine Valley College, Irvine; from Chapman University, Orange, to Vanguard University, Costa Mesa; the options are many and varied.
