Across the water of San Francisco Bay from that city, El Cerrito, California, is the home of around 25,000 residents. It is about 15 miles from San Francisco and lies completely within Contra Costa County. The town has two stations that serve as stops for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train system that connects cities throughout the Bay region. Oakland and Berkeley are both just a short train ride or drive away. Thespian productions are showcased year-round at the Contra Costa Civic Theatre. The city maintains nearly 50 acres of parkland, and its largest retail center is El Cerrito Plaza.
The military maintains a large reservation near here, and closest medical facility is just five miles distance in San Pablo. A golf course and a country club serve the city, as do a regional park and a nature preserve. El Cerrito is known in pop culture as the site of rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival's final concert, as it is also the hometown of two of the band's members, Tom and John Fogerty. The public education system here includes four primary schools, a junior high and a senior high school. Private institutions include Catholic, Montessori and Christian schools.
