Dana Point Facts, History, and Local Events
Richard Henry Dana, in his sea adventure "Two Years Before the Mast," described Dana point as the most romantic point on the California Coast. Located midway between Los Angeles and San Diego, in the southern part of Orange County, Dana Point is surrounded by other urban areas like Laguna Beach, Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano, and San Clemente. This makes Dana Point the ideal balance of a secluded idyllic getaway that is conveniently close to the hotter action of the cities. Obvious things to enjoy are fishing or whale watching, sailing in beats or catamarans, or simply absorbing and reveling in the scenic beauty of the stunning Orange County coast.
The city of Dana Point was incorporated in 1989, and named after Lawyer, seaman, author, Richard Henry Dana Jr. The community is home to over 35,000 people in about seven miles of hills and coastal beside the Pacific Ocean. A unique landmark of the area is the bluff known as the "Headlands" overlooking Dana Point Harbor. This is among the major alterations made to the Orange County coastline by the human hand. The Dana Point Harbor offers space for as many as two and a half thousand boats, has numerous specialty shops, superb restaurants, bicycling, parasailing and all kinds of recreational activities. The Doheny State Park is close, and offers space and facilities for outdoor activities such as picnicking, camping, swimming, surfing, exploring tide pools and so on. The city has 23 beautiful public parks for outdoor activities as well as events like weddings.

For the outdoorsy, the Public Trail System links all the parks and open spaces around the Headlands, with numerous pedestrian trails, many paths for beach access, and is dotted with scenic overlooks. This way, you can make the most of the pedestrian trails, as you enjoy exploring and discovering all the beach access trails, and take in the spectacular beauty of the coastline from the many vantage points.
Other attractions include the Ocean Institute, Founded in 1977. This is a non-profit educational organization which dedicates its time and resources to the awareness and preservation of the ocean and ocean life. Looking for more? Head over to Doheny, for five aquariums, a great gift shop, and great surfing for the enthusiast. Capistrano Beach is just a couple of miles south, and is the perfect family outing destination. You could take in the majesty and mysteries of nature at the Dana Point Marine Life Refuge where tide pools display nature in all its quirkiness at low tide. This area, on the far west side of Dana Point Harbor, is an important marine habitat and a great draw for the amateur naturalist.
