Contra Costa County Quick Facts

Located near San Francisco and its bay, Contra Costa County, California, is the home of such cities as Antioch, San Pablo, Pittsburg, Walnut Creek, and its county seat, Martinez. Over a million people reside in the county, which is mostly a suburb of San Francisco and whose name means “opposite coast” in Spanish. Chemical plants and oil refineries are in operation in the county, enabled by the extensive coastal property here, making exporting more simple. There are almost 20 school districts within the county, as well as more than half a dozen community colleges and private schools.

A small private Catholic college is found here as well. Contra Costa Regional Medical Center provides medical care and attention for the region, and the biggest shopping area is in Walnut Creek. Mount Diablo, a nearly 4,000-foot peak located in a state park, is a popular location for visitors in the area, as are the county’s two water parks. The county is full of other regional and local parks, including one of the country’s biggest dog parks. Three towns have Amtrak railway stations, allowing residents to move about without a car, and several historical sites and museums will appeal to those interested in the area’s history.
