Capitola Quick Facts

A town in Santa Cruz County, just six miles east of Santa Cruz, Capitola, California, is one of the oldest beach resorts in California and is home to a population of just over 10,000. The town lies right on Monterey Bay on the ocean’s coast, which has helped make it a popular tourist destination. Local shops and restaurants on the coast connect to a fishing wharf and the beach, and make the locale an enjoyable spot. Capitola is just off of New Brighton State Beach and home to Anna Jean Cummings Park. It began in the 1800s as a lumber port and later revamped its identity into that of a resort town. Shopping can be done at Capitola Mall and the Brown Ranch Marketplace.

Soquel Creek travels through the town and is the site of the annual Begonia Festival each September. That same month, the town is also host to the Capitola Art & Wine Festival. In the spring, a dog festival and annual dog parade is celebrated to recognize residents’ pets. Those interested in learning more about the area’s history can take it all in at the Capitola Museum, and local arts and crafts can be viewed and purchased at one of the six galleries in Capitola. The weather here is generally warm and sunny, with ocean breezes blowing through the streets and alleys. The nearest hospitals are just a short trip away in Santa Cruz, and the nearest international airport is in San Jose.
