Capistrano Beach Facts, History, and Local Events
Capistrano Beach is south of Doheny Beach, in the almost endless ocean front heaven that is the southern Orange County. Rolling hills, and long stretches of pristine sandy beaches makes the coastline one of the best kept secret paradise destinations in the country. Capistrano Beach offers a small town feel, and friendly atmosphere to visitors and locals, and its narrow stretches of beach and the many hills and cliffs give it a refreshing degree of difference from the wider coast north, like Newport Beach. It is the ideal spot for a slightly longer vacation, or relocation, being free of the rush-tourist. Being at a little distance from the bigger theme parks like Disneyland, it does not attract the tourists on short weekend getaways who throng the California coast.
Capistrano Beach is a small beach community located a couple of miles south of Dana Point Harbor along the coast. The area is dotted with upper class homes and gated communities, and although it does have its own zip code, it is officially a part of Dana Point. Located off the Pacific Coast Highway, sunny Capistrano Beach is close enough to Dana Point Harbor, and other places, to enable the locals and visitors many options in entertainment. Other urban centers close by include San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, and Laguna Beach. Capistrano Beach is a true beach town, and has maintained its unique small town charm by avoiding the crass commercialization that has overtaken much of this part of California. Downtown Capistrano Beach showcases its history with the Mission Basilica, Capistrano Depot (the old railroad stateion), and the historic Los Rios District.
The community is served by the Capistrano Unified School District, which provides education to almost 50,000 students with its "Excellence in Education" motto. The school district comprises of about fifty schools, including thirty five elementary schools, eight middle schools, and five high schools. Nearby universities, most within an hour's drive, include the University of California at Irvine, and at San Diego, Saddleback Community College, California State University at Fullerton, and San Marcos, and Chapman University and Concordia University.
There is something for just about everyone to do in Capistrano Beach, from sun and sand, beach activities like volleyball and basketball, fishing in the summer, picnics and so on. Nearby Dana Point is a great spot for water enthusiasts and nature lovers, offering snorkeling, whale watching, and Santa Catalina Island cruises. Dana Point also offers some great restaurants and charming shops. For the theme park enthusiast, Capistrano Beach is a short distance from Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm, and about an hour away are the San Diego Zoo, the Sea World, attractions like Legoland, Wild Animal Park, etc. Los Angeles, and Hollywood, with all they have to offer, are close by as well. For the history buff, the Mission San Juan Capistrano, "The Jewel of the Missions," is a must see. One of the most important historical, and cultural landmarks of California, it is a historic site that is non-profit, and supported by tourism. The historic downtown district and the Los Rios District also have much to offer those who are interested in history.
There are a range of restaurants offering Italian, Mexican and Chinese cuisine, all within an easy walk or a bike ride. There are golf courses, and all the major attractions of the area are less than an hour away.
