Buena Park Facts, History, and Local Events Information

Buena Park is located in Orange County California, centrally located in terms of access to other urban areas. It is a short 10 to 15 minute drive from the Anaheim Stadium, Disneyland, Crystal Cathedral, the Performing Arts Center, South Coast Plaza and many more. The world-famous beaches of Orange County are within a half an hour from the city. Big Bear Mountain Resort is close, as are all the attractions of Los Angeles, Hollywood, and San Diego. Buena Park offers exciting attractions and fine dining venues in northwestern Orange County. It is home to about 85,000 people, and right next to the city of Anaheim -- 12 miles northwest of Santa Ana. The City's Entertainment Zone has the Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament as well as the Pirates Dinner Adventure, which draw thousands of tourists per week for dinner theater shows. The city was founded in 1887, incorporated in 1953, and is today known for tourism. A vibrant and charming residential community, many attractions, and good economic development, Buena Park is a well rounded modern city.

Buena Park, California Area MapThe original Spanish inhabitants of the area were settled here on enormous Spanish land grants. The land grant of Manuel Nieto was divided into five ranches by his heirs, in 1834. The Rancho Los Coyotes, one of these five, included the land that is today the City of Buena Park. The area was transferred to Mexican rule in 1822, and later to the United States in 1848 after the Mexican-American War. After 1850, after California attained statehood, and the transcontinental railroad being built in 1869, the city began to grow. By the time it was connected to Los Angeles, in 1875, the land for the city had passed into the hands of Abel Stearns. In 1885, James A. Whitaker bought some of this land and founded the City of Buena Park in 1887. Incorporated in 1953, Buena Park was primarily an agricultural center with dairy, wine and citrus products being its mainstay. Today, the city is a residential suburb and a popular real estate choice for people of many racial origins, and the home of world-famous tourist attractions.

The main claim to fame is Knott's Berry Farm, the Medieval Times dinner theatre, and the Movieland Wax Museum. From 1,000 residents in 1900, to over 85,000 people today, Buena Park has grown considerably. The city is currently undergoing redevelopment to revitalize its economic base, and attract retail and commercial businesses. Efforts are also ongoing to update the entertainment and tourist corridor and draw more visitors. Much of the city's physical and financial growth is attributable to the Knott family, and the revenue generated by tourists to the Knott amusement park. No one could imagine how much difference would be made to the future of the city, when Walter Knott and his family first arrived in 1920. They began as farmers on 10 rented acres and eight years later, a permanent roadside stand was built and berries and plants were put on sale. By 1934, Cordelia Knott was serving chicken dinners on her wedding china at 65 cents a pop. By 1940, Walter Knott came up with the idea of his Ghost Town attraction in order to entertain the long line of hungry people waiting for the dinners.

The city of Buena Park is served by seven school districts, including the Buena Park School District, the Fullerton Joint Union High School District, the Cypress, Centralia, Magnolia and Savanna school districts. The city is the entertainment capital of South California. Buena Park boasts some of the most famous tourist attractions in America and enough hotels and motels to meet every budget. The city also has its own local history park with preserved several historic buildings.
