A small town with a population of just about 1,000 residents, Brookdale, California, is located right on Highway 9 in Santa Cruz County. It lies right in the heart of the Redwood country of Central California, just east of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and 12 miles north of Santa Cruz in northern California's San Lorenzo Valley. The town's biggest attraction is The Brookdale Inn & Spa, formerly known as the Brookdale Lodge, which is made popular and well-known for the stream that runs through its restaurant, the Brook Room. The original lodge was built in 1890, though it has been restored since then.

The woods and outdoors atmosphere of the area provide residents with a number of outdoor activities to enjoy, from hiking and biking to horseback riding and photograhphy. Big Basin State Park is just about 10 miles to the north of Brookdale, and the shores of the Pacific Ocean are just about 10 miles west. No schools are located in Brookdale, but children of residents here attend schools in nearby towns in the Santa Cruz County Schools district, or can choose one of the many private schooling options in the area. Nearby hospitals are located in Santa Cruz and Watsonville, and access to the area can be obtained at the commerical airport in San Jose.
