Brea, California Area MapBrea is the Spanish word for tar, and the area was originally known for tar oozing from the hills, which was used by Indians as well as pioneers for fuel and waterproofing. The oil boom for the area began in the early 1890s when the Union Oil Company bought up over a thousand acres of the area for oil exploration and development. When the first oil well came in, in 1898, the boom truly started, laying the foundations for the Brea of today. The first actual town developed here in the early 1900s, and small to medium businesses as well as small scale industries began to open, to cater to the needs of the oil industry and its workers. The City of Brea officially became incorporated in 1917.

The oil boom lasted well into the 1940s, after which the oil production began to decline. Between then and the 1970s, housing development and new businesses continued to spring up. With the construction of the Orange freeway, industrial parks and retail areas multiplied, as businesses rushed in to take better advantage of the location. Declining oil production led to agricultural development in citrus fruits like lemons and oranges. However, citrus groves soon gave way to industrial and residential complexes and developments. More development occurred in the 1990s and into the new century, turning downtown Brea into a major shopping and entertainment destination teeming with movies, cafes, comedy clubs, farmer's market, shops and restaurants.

Brea is served by a number of local schools many of which have won awards for academic excellence.
