Bonny Doon Quick Facts
An unincorporated community that lies just northwest of Santa Cruz, the town of Bonny Doon was founded in the 1850s as a logging camp. The town derives its unique name from a line in Robert Burns' song, "The Banks O' Doon," which a Scotsman came to call the town. Bonny Doon is in Santa Cruz County. It is a small community and doesn't have a particular city center or square, but does feature several local wineries, a church, two fire stations, Bonny Doon Elementary School and a private-use airport. Residents who choose to live in Bonny Doon generally like to be able to escape the bustle of the cities and relax here on the slopes of the Redwood forests. The community is close-knit though, with groups and clubs like a garden club, ladies club, knitting club and volunteer fire department.
The ocean and Monterey Bay, which are just a couple miles west of here, can even be seen from certain spots in town. Because of its remote location, some carriers have limited mobile phone service in the area, but both cable and DSL internet and TV are available in the town now. Bonny Doon is about 15 miles north of Santa Cruz, west of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, and just a short drive from the University of California, Santa Cruz. In addition to the public elementary, there are two private schools and a preschool. There is also a large alpacas farm operation here.
