Berkeley Quick Facts
A large, urban city of over 100,000 residents, Berkeley, California, is a landmark U.S. city in the Bay region, famed as the home to the University of California, Berkeley. It lies within the confines of Alameda County, near San Francisco Bay’s northeastern shores. The city has a long history of activism on the part of social liberties and is at the epicenter of the ‘green’ movement. Many of these social mores have come about from the activism on the university’s campus, which is home to a number of renowned researchers and institutions such as a national laboratory, a science hall, a space lab and a math research institute. Berkeley also is classified as a Division I NCAA school in athletics, and the Golden Bears compete in a number of varsity sports that residents can watch.
The public grade school system here includes 11 primary schools, three junior highs and a single senior high, in addition to some private schools. Attractions include an art museum, a film archive, a performance theater, a center for the arts and a large Jewish center. The city’s cycling and walking rates among commuters is one of the highest in the country, as many abandon their cars to enjoy the warm California climate. In addition to UCB, another four-year college, Armstrong University, as well as the two-year Berkeley City College, offer degree classes and education. Regional reserves and parks operate in the vicinity. Several annual events are celebrated in this city, from a Jewish musical festival and an arts fest to a kite festival and Himalayan fair.
