North of San Francisco in Solano County, the city of Benicia, California, is home to around 30,000 Californians with San Pablo Bay lying just to the west of the city. The town has been around for a couple hundred years and has the look of a classic town full of history. San Francisco is about 35 miles southwest of here, and Sacramento, the state's capital, is about 60 miles northeast. Benicia was California's capital for a short time in the mid 1800s and it lies just off the Carquinez Strait. Many residents of Benicia and surrounding areas find employment at one of the more than 600 companies housed in the town's industrial park, where 7,000 workers report each day. The town's public school system consists of four primary schools, a middle school and a pair of high schools.
A popular event hosted in town is the Benicia Peddler's Fair, a market that has been ongoing for more than 50 years with over 300 merchants. The town also has a significant Fourth of July celebration, with a parade, dance, park and fireworks. Fine arts in Benicia include several independent art galleries, Arts Benicia Center Gallery and the Benicia Old Town Theatre. Two large parks -- Benicia State Recreation Area and Benicia Capital State Historic Park -- provide opportunities for enjoying the outdoors, and the community's waterside location provide for the possibility of such attractions as the Benicia Marina and the Benicia Yacht Club.
