A small enclave about 10 miles north of Santa Cruz and about 30 miles southwest of San Jose, the town of Ben Lomond, California, is home to a population of around 2,500, nestled in the redwood trees less than 10 miles from the ocean shores and Monterey Bay. The town lies next to Quail Hollow Ranch County Park and just north of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in the San Lorenzo Valley. Ben Lomond was named for an early Scottish immigrant and is home to its own Highland County Park, which is the home of the annual Highland Games Festival. The town is small, with a total area of less than one square mile, but it draws visitors for its relaxing, outdoor atmosphere at places like the Sequoia Retreat Center of Northern California.
Highway 9 runs through Ben Lomond, connecting the three Valley towns -- Felton, Ben Lomond and Boulder Creek -- with the rest of the state. Construction, education, and professional, scientific, and technical services are the industries in which most residents work, with the nearest hospital just nine miles away in Santa Cruz. A charter grade school and charter high school and the private St. Peter and Paul Academy make up the educational institutions here.
