An unincorporated community of nearly 10,000 residents, Aptos, California, is located in Santa Cruz County, the gateway to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The town, which lies about 10 miles east of Santa Cruz on Monterey Bay, is a tight-knit, smaller community in the northern part of the state. It is located near the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, and is home to Seacliff State Beach, Aptos Seascape Golf Course and Rio Del Mar Country Club. The S.S. Palo Alto ship, moored and converted into a pier, is a popular attraction and is home to numerous restaurants, a pool and a dance pavilion. The Rancho del Mar Shopping center provides retail options, and five wineries in the town produce local drinks. Three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, all in the Pajaro Valley School District, provide public education in Aptos, while two private schools, Santa Cruz Montessori School and Aptos Academy, provide alternative options.
The town is located just next to Cabrillo College community college. Construction, health care and education are the largest industries, with the nearest hospital just six miles away in Santa Cruz and the nearest commercial airport about 25 miles away in San Jose. The town hosts annually the Fourth of July "World's Shortest Parade," so-called because the route is just about one-fourth of a mile long, and the annual Aptos Blues Festival, which has been previously headlined by such acts as Bonnie Raitt. The Aptos Cinemas has been converted into an independent film house, and the Aptos Museum provides a look into the history and evolution of the town.
