Alameda Quick Facts
Next to Oakland and located on an island, the city of Alameda, California, is across from San Francisco and on the island from where it derives its name, Alameda Island. Another smaller island is Bay Farm Island, also included as part of the city of Alameda. The city is home to almost 75,000 residents and also lies within the confines of Alameda County. The public education system in the city includes eight primary schools, three junior highs and a pair of senior high schools. Additionally, 10 or so private schools, both large and small, provide an alternative. Annually, the biggest event in the city is its Independence Day celebration, complete with a parade.
Attractions on the island include a theater, a ballet and its affiliated academy, and an opera. Other sites include a pair of state beaches and a former naval aircraft carrier that now serves as a mini-military museum. The Oakland Raiders offices and training facilities are located within this city. A community college and a hospital both operate on the island as well. To reach access of the island and out into other parts of the state, there are several options, including three auto bridges, a pedestrian bridge and two tunnels. Several bus routes run directly from the city to San Francisco, and two ferry operations provide shuttle service as well.
