Alameda County Quick Facts

One of the largest counties in the state, Alameda County, California, ranks as No. 7 largest with over 800 miles square, taking up most of the San Francisco Bay area. The county is home to around 1.5 million residents and its seat is the city of Oakland. Many throughout the region use the county’s major commercial international airport to fly in and out of the region. The county is home to a trifecta of professional sports teams, with one each in pro baseball, basketball and football. Besides Oakland, the county is most famous as the home to the University of California, Berkeley, a renowned education institution with world-class professors.

Other schools include an arts college, a private, four-year college and a regional campus of Cal State. Three districts of community colleges operate too. Nearly 20 school districts operate the many K-12 schools here, and several private schools are run as well. The home ownership rate in the county is over 50%. Six golf course, a ballet, a zoo and a science and space center are just a few of the attractions in the county. There also are quite a number of museums, covering such topics as African-American history and culture, aviations, art and film. Maneuvering about the county is quick and convenient via the Bay Area Rapid Transit that travels to San Francisco and other area cities, or via the any of the local bus routes.
