Scottsdale Facts, History, and Local Events
Scottsdale is one of the best resort destinations in the southwest, and home to over 200,000 people. It is a young community, active and affluent, very close to Phoenix. It is a premier tourist destination, with much to offer both residents and visitors, including over a hundred golf courses, huge hotels, hundreds of restaurants, and much more. Scottsdale's immense popularity as a tourist destination is also because of its many high-quality spas. Add to this its scenic vistas of beautiful desert, the Salt River, rocky parks, mountains, and ranches around the city. Recreation options include horseback rides and hiking, hot air balloon rides, kayaking, and climbing within a few minutes of wherever you are. Annual events also attract a large and diverse crowd, and you can revisit the original way of life in Scottsdale at the old town. There is also plenty of shopping and multiple cuisine options for dining.
The Sonoran Desert landscapes are enticing, and there are any numbers of trails, rivers and mountains to explore, alone or in a group. Enthusiasts of the sport can try their hand at championship courses that offer some of the best golfing in America. Native American healing techniques are used by the spas here, to help heal ills of the body and soul. For the retail enthusiast, the downtown area offers world-class shopping, amazing art galleries where you can pick up the next big name before it becomes big, fantastic restaurants that are famous for good reason, and a vibrant nightlife.
Scottsdale is easily accessible from downtown Phoenix, Sky Harbor International Airport, and Highways 101 and 202. With close to 250,000 people, it is sometimes described as a land locked version of Miami's South Beach. The original inhabitants of the area were the Hohokam people, who farmed the area until around 1400 AD. They built an extensive system of canals to provide their homes and farms with water. After they disappeared, Scottsdale became a Pima village and some of them remained here even in the 20th century, long after American settlement. Around 1888, American settlers started establishing homesteads and adapting the Hohokam canals to more modern use. As more and more people arrived, the beautiful weather round the year began to attract holiday makers, tourists and seekers of health cures. As a result, Scottsdale soon became a hub for resorts and spas. It was incorporated in 1951.
The internationally renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright was inspired by the desert majesty of Scottsdale, and set up a camp at Taliesin West. Many of the buildings in this city, and in the entire Phoenix area are of his design. The city soon went from farming to urban and from middle class to affluent. The rising status drew more developers, and more residents, especially retirees and young upwardly mobile families. As the tax base improved, the city undertook many civic projects that have helped preserve the history and lifestyle of Scottsdale. Today, Scottsdale is a town of a quarter of a million people, the sixth-largest city in the state. Its quality of life was acknowledged by the United States Conference of Mayors when they named it the Most Livable City in the United States in 1993.
Tourism is the biggest industry and the tourism industry the largest employer in Scottsdale. The offshoots of these services are the golf courses, spas, and corporate and convention centers which also employ a sizeable portion of the populace and bring in significant revenue. The amazing weather of the region also encourages many visitors to buy a second home here. In the recent years, trendy night spots, up market restaurants, and international brands shopping, have attracted more of the younger and more stylish travelers to the area.
