Arcadia (Scottsdale) Facts, History, and Local Events
Arcadia is not really a town, or a city. It is a Phoenix, Arizona, neighborhood, roughly between 44th and 68th Streets, and from Camelback Road all the way to the Arizona Crosscut Canal. The unique attractions of the area appeal to both residents and visitors from the Biltmore Fashion Park, Arizona Biltmore Resort, and the Phoenix Zoo, to the Arizona Desert Botanical Gardens. As a residential neighborhood, Arcadia has large lots with homes built where citrus groves once stood. Homes in this area have spectacular views of the Camelback Mountain and the Piestewa Peak, also called Squaw Peak. The homes are surrounded by mature trees and beautiful landscaping, surrounded by high-end shopping, and commercial complexes, making Arcadia one of Phoenix's most popular residential regions.
Because Arcadia is not really an official geographical area, just a general phoenix neighborhood, its boundaries are defined by different people in different ways. Overall however, the East/west boundaries are generally considered to range from 32nd Street to the Phoenix, Scottsdale border, and the North/south boundaries are considered to range from the southern foothills of the Camelback Mountain, to Thomas. The population is around 10,000, and the median age of residents is around forty. Arcadia is one the most popular dining and shopping destinations in Phoenix and residents also enjoy easy access to activities like hiking at the nearby mountains. The area used to be citrus farms, from 1919 to the mid-1950s, when the area began to be suburbanized and its characteristic ranch style homes were built on large lots. It has attracted residents with its convenient location, being minutes away from world class restaurants, a range of shopping destinations, and major employers. Money Magazine named Arcadia one of its Best Place to Live, because of all the amenities it offers, like lush plant life, and cooler temperatures than surrounding areas. The schools in the area are some of the best in the state, and nearby Scottsdale and The Biltmore Fashion Park offer a lot of art, fashion, and fun. A quarter of an hour from downtown Phoenix, or the airport, and a mere five minutes from the freeway system, arcadia is perfectly located for commute too. Residents can follow Interstate 10 or 17 or one of the local highways to commute to Scottsdale, Mesa or Tempe.
The name derives from a peaceful, rural region in ancient Greece. The land in the area was first put up for sale in the 1920s, for 35 cents an acre. Sold primarily in 5-acre parcels after the Arcadia Water Company began irrigating the land, much of it turned into citrus farms. A large number of grapefruit and orange trees remain to this day. The groves spread over the area began to be suburbanized in the 1950s, when the development of the city of Phoenix changed the rural nature of Arcadia. Most of the properties standing today were built in the 1950's or later. Although some do date back to the 1920s and 1930s, there has been extensive remodeling done for many of them. Today's Arcadia resident enjoys a beautiful neighborhood of spacious homes on large lots, lush verdure, and postwar ranch homes. Arcadia schools are operated by the Scottsdale Unified School District, and have a strong reputation for being dynamic, and offering top-notch education. They provide first-class academics, exceptional teachers and a great learning environment. Arcadia is also home to some of the best pre-schools, and Montessori schools in the area.
Individual Neighborhoods in Arcadia include Arcadia Lite, Mount Grove, Hilker Estates, Williamsburg Square Townhomes, Rancho Ventura, Windemere, Three Fountains, and so on. Activities available to the residents and visitors of Arcadia include shopping, entertainment and dining at centers all around it, from the Biltmore Fashion Park or Scottsdale Fashion Square to downtown Scottsdale. For the outdoorsy person, the Arizona Canal, just North of Indian School Rd, is a great place for a bike ride, a walk or a jog. The Schemer Arts Center, with a permanent collection, exhibits, and art classes as well as performances is a great place for the art enthusiast to visit.
