Ahwatukee Facts, History, and Local Events

Ahwatukee, Arizona, also known as the Ahwatukee Foothills Village, is a small community in southern Phoenix. To the north, it borders on the South Mountain Park, while the Gila River Indian reservation is to the south. Chandler, Guadalupe, and Tempe are to the east, and state owned land lies to the west. Ahwatukee is a charming bedroom community and home to about 85,000 people. Although technically part of Phoenix, geographical features have physically isolated it from the city, making the community a peaceful suburban place to call home. It is the ideal place to experience the charm of small town life, while being close enough to all the amenities of a big city just a stone's throw away. Nestled in the mountains, the area experiences great weather and much sunshine, which combines with its scenic landscapes, many golf courses, and extensive trails to make the community popular. There is no dearth of things to do here, from fine shops and boutiques to a variety of restaurants offering international cuisine. Large department stores, health food outlets, and many specialty stores, a megaplex movie theater, not to mention the country clubs and public recreation facilities make Ahwatukee perfect for just about anyone.

In the early 19th century, Indians hunted on and farmed the land of this area. Gold and silver mines brought outsiders and settlers, and homes began to be built starting in 1921 with Dr. Ames. Helen Brinton bought this home in 1935, naming it Ahwatukee or House of Dreams. In the 1970s development companies became interested in the area, and purchased large swathes of land for planned communities. The community was named among the best places to live in America, by Money Magazine.it is a fairly affluent community, comprised of athletes and double income families, and places great emphasis on quality education. The Kyrene School District, renowned for academic excellence, handles the education of the community's K-8 students, and high school goers are served by the Tempe Union High School District. Higher learning for the Ahwatukee student is a simple matter of accessing one of the many colleges and universities in Phoenix. Even the Arizona State University, main campus, is merely a short drive away.

School in the Kyrene School District, serving K-8 Ahwatukee students, include the Kyrene Cerritos, Kyrene de la Esperanza, Kyrene Estrella, Kyrene Sierra, and so on. Middle schools include Centennial, Akimel A-al, and Altadeña middle schools, and high schools include Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe. Some private or charter schools also exist in the area, including Inspire Kids Montessori, Keystone Montessori School, Skyline Technical High School, and the Horizon Community Learning Center Charter School. The other point of focus for the community is its economy, and the Ahwatukee Chamber of Commerce has taken a leading role in strengthening local economy, and promoting community and business opportunities. It gives its members the facility for business networking and represents their interests with the government. Already, over six hundred businesses are a part of the network, all working together with a view to improving the quality of life of the residents of the community.

For the people who call Ahwatukee home, there is a lot to do in the area. There are four public golf courses. The nightlife, too, is quite active, and centers mainly around the areas around 48th Street or Ray Road. The new Pecos Park Community Center has quickly become the hangout of local youngsters, and the paved bike paths and Kyrene Area Youth Collaboration offer many options for fun to kids, and younger members of the community. For the older and more mature residents, the Country Club offers social intercourse, and a superb golf course. Fine dining restaurants range from Brazilian steak to Indian and Mexican cuisine. And if you still need more, the bustling heart of the city is just a tiny drive away.
