Phenix City/Fort Mitchell Alabama Quick Facts
The Georgia Militia had originally built Fort Mitchell to be their military presence here during the First Seminole War. However, until 1825, the fort only had a small force that continued to garrison here. Around 1825, the growing community of Fort Mitchell began to emerge as an important center in the area for commerce, specially in the field of trading with the Native Americans populations around the area. The trading house opened in 1817, and the post office which was started in 1818, were both important steps on the road to the prosperity experienced by the 1820s. The region, including the areas which are now Phenix City, were inhabited, originally, by the Creek Indians, specifically their Coweta branch. The town of Columbus, GA, across the river from Phenix city, and the Fort Mitchell areas soon came to be known for being the center of the more unscrupulous traders.
Phenix city was incorporated as the town of Brownville, in 1883, and the name was later changed to the current one in 1897. The area, at the time, was known for its forest products based industries, agriculture, and its masonry products, which garnered it a reputation for superb brick making. Apart from this, Phenix City has also been known, at various stages of its history has been known for other industries including lithography, breweries, and its textile mills. Today, the most important industries, and largest employment generators in Phenix City include construction, fishing, farming, forestry, food processing, brick making, packaging, etc.
There’s a fair bit for the visitor or the resident to do in the Phenix City, Fort Mitchell area, including the annual May Day celebrations in Phenix City. The community of Phenix City also hosts a classic horse show, a rodeo, and a Riverwalk Festival of Lights. There is a Christmas Parade, and a local Festival of Art. However, the most famous attraction of the area is undoubtedly the Fort at Fort Mitchell. The reconstructed stockade of the original Fort Mitchell at the original trading outpost site is a must see for history buffs. The fort was named after Georgia Governor David B. Mitchell and built on a strategic hill overlooking the nearby Chattahoochee River. It remained an important defense site during the First Seminole War which took place in 1817-1818, serving as a key staging point. When the original stockade was replaced by the second and smaller fort, it became a base for the Creek War of 1836 and 1837. The fort also had some significance in the Civil War, when Confederate troop units mustered at the site before joining the army.
The site is now a state maintained park with a reconstruction of the first fort, and featuring burial grounds, and a museum.
