Opelika was originally settled by pioneers and settlers well into the 19th century. In the late 1830s, the settlers named it Lebanon, and the decade saw a continuous forcible removal of the native American populations who lived in the region. The next decade, the 1840s saw the arrival of the railroad, setting the community on its way to becoming a commercial hub. The city was incorporated in 1854.
