Featured Virginia Cities and Counties

Virginia Quick Facts

The oldest state in America, Virginia was named after Queen Elizabeth I of England. It was established as the first colony of the new English world in 1607. Due to its long history, the commonwealth has been the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents, more than any other state. It is located on the Atlantic Coast of the Southern region of the country, geographically shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay. The capital is Richmond and Virginia Beach is the most populous city, followed by Norfolk and Chesapeake. The population is around 7.7 million, and forests cover 65 percent of the state. Virginia’s location right next to Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital, contributes to its culture greatly. Two counties in the D.C. metro area, Fairfax and Loudoun counties, in 2006 had the highest and second-highest median household income of all U.S. counties. Additionally, one-third of Virginia's jobs are in the service sector and it has the highest concentration of technology workers of any state.

Federal agencies, such as The Pentagon, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, the United States Geological Survey and the United States Patent and Trademark Office are headquartered here. The heavy government presence also has made government contracting, including defense and security contracting, a large industry. Virginia has 17 Fortune 500 companies and the largest concentration of military bases of any area in the world. Norfolk is home to the world’s largest Naval base. Agricultural products include cattle, tobacco and peanuts. Tourism is a large draw in Virginia, in the beach areas and in historic settlement towns like Jamestown, Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg. There are 161 colleges and universities in Virginia. The state hosts two NASCAR tracks, Martinsville Speedway and Richmond International Raceway, both of which currently host annual races.
