South Carolina Quick Facts

Located in the Deep South of America, South Carolina was originally part of the Carolina province, one of the original 13 colonies. It is home to a population of around 4.4 million residents and is bordered to the north by North Carolina; to the south and west by Georgia across the Savannah River; and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. The state’s Blue Ridge Region, containing portions of the Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the southern Appalachian chain. The state’s capital and largest city is Columbia. Other large cities include Greenville, Charleston and Spartanburg, and Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head, two coastal cities that are major draws for tourists to the state. Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Greenville and Hilton Head are all home to international airports, a large number for the state’s size. The Chattanooga River, on the border between South Carolina and Georgia, is a popular summer destination, and the state has a number of lakes, covering more than 683 square miles. Lake Hartwell and Lake Murray both host Bassmaster Classic tournaments.

Agricultural products cultivated here include tobacco, poultry, cattle, dairy products, soybeans and hogs. Common industrial products include textile goods, chemical products, paper products, machinery, automobiles and automotive products. Colleges here include the College of Charleston, the oldest college in the state, founded in 1770; the University of South Carolina in Columbia; private Furman University; The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, a state-supported, comprehensive military college in Charleston; Clemson University; South Carolina State University; and Bob Jones University, a non-denominational Christian university. The state’s Darlington Raceway hosts one Nascar race weekend annually. Golfing is a popular pastime and there are hundreds of courses throughout the state.
