The most densely populated state in the country, New Jersey is located in the Northeastern region of the U.S., on the Atlantic Ocean. It borders New York to the north, Delaware to the south and Pennsylvania to the west. Though the state has no major city itself, parts of it lie within the metropolitan areas of New York and Philadelphia. The state was one of the original 13 American colonies and is home to about 8.7 million residents, making it the 11th most populated state. It also has the highest median household income in the country, at more than $55,000, and the most millionaires of any state. There are five regions of New Jersey. Northeastern New Jersey, also referred to as the Gateway Region, is located just west of New York City and many residents commute to the city for work. Northwestern New Jersey is more rural and mountainous. The southeast area of the state, the "Jersey Shore," lies along the Atlantic Coast and is the location of many expensive homes. The southwestern part lies near Philadelphia and relates with much of that city's culture. Finally, the southern part of the state is covered in forest and has a much lower population than the rest of the areas.

The economy of the state is anchored by the pharmaceutical industry, chemical development, telecommunications, food processing, electric equipment, printing and publishing. Major pharmaceutical players like s Johnson and Johnson, Sanofi-Aventis, Novartis, Pfizer, Merck, Wyeth, Hoffman-LaRoche, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Schering-Plough call the state home. New Jersey's agricultural outputs include horses, vegetables, fruits and nuts, seafood and dairy products. Newark Liberty International Airport is the seventh busiest airport in the U.S. Newark also is home to one of the world's largest container ports and shipments can be seen coming and going constantly. Tourism is a heavy industry as well, particularly the oceanside towns on the shore, and Atlantic City. The state's George Washington Bridge, which connects it to New York City's Manhattan, is one of the most heavily trafficked bridges in the world. New Jersey Transit operates local rail service throughout the state, connecting to New York.
